The Ossau-Iraty cheese route
Follow this gastronomic route like no other, as it winds its way through our valleys along narrow, picturesque roads! Discover not only the traditional cheese of Béarn and the neighbouring Basque Country, but also cheese-makers, sheepfolds, dairies and traditional houses.
Voted the best cheese in the world at the 2011 World Cheese Awards, the Ossau-Iraty cheese is made from the milk of a local race of sheep, only in the Bearnese and Basque mountains. The cheese has enjoyed its own AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) quality label since 1980, as well as its own European-level PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) since 1996.
Thanks to a well-marked route winding its way through the area producing Ossau-Iraty cheese, straddling Béarn and the Basque Country, set out to meet our traditional herders and cheese-makers. Stop for a tasting (or two) and discover the savoir-faire of these passionate men and women keeping the tradition of this great cheese alive.
