The Fort du Portalet

Forgotten for nearly 50 years, the Fort du Portalet is being reborn following its purchase by the Municipal Community of the Aspe Valley. This long-awaited renaissance consists of a vast restoration campaign currently underway. The military fort was constructed in the 19th century by order of King Louis Philippe in 1842. Built up against the rock in a glacial cross cliff of the Aspe Valley, between Etsaut and Urdos, its mission was to protect the Spanish border only a few kilometres away.

Visitors are ever impressed by the architecture of this edifice. Listed as a historic monument in 2005, the fort is slowly being opened to the public, as its renovation progresses. In addition to admiring its architecture, visitors can learn about its atypical mission that has seen it evolve from a military fort under King Louis Philippe to a state prison during the second half of the 20th century. Such famous figures of French history as Blum, Daladier, Mandel, Gamelin, Reynaud and even Pétain were imprisoned at the Fort du Portalet.

Knowledgeable heritage guides share with visitors the fort's history, from its creation to the present day. Visits must be booked in advance via the Aspe Valley Tourist Office.
